Nuclear force = strongest known fundamental force, short-range, charge-independent, holds the nucleus together.

Key properties of the nuclear force (strong force) between nucleons (protons and neutrons):

  • It is attractive and much stronger than the electrostatic (Coulomb) repulsive force between protons at nuclear distances — this is what holds the nucleus together despite the mutual repulsion of protons.
  • It is a SHORT-RANGE force, effective only over distances of about 1–3 femtometres (10⁻¹⁵ m); beyond about 3 fm it falls off rapidly to negligible values, unlike gravity or the Coulomb force which follow an inverse-square law over all distances.
  • It is CHARGE-INDEPENDENT (or nearly so): the force between proton-proton, neutron-neutron, and proton-neutron pairs is approximately the same, once electromagnetic effects are excluded. …
