It is the wavelength of the light that sets the resolution limit — the shorter the wavelength, the finer the detail that can be distinguished.

When light from two nearby objects passes through an aperture (a lens or a slit), each point spreads out into a diffraction pattern. Two objects can be seen as separate only if their diffraction patterns do not overlap too much (Rayleigh criterion). The angular limit of resolution is proportional to λ/D (λ = wavelength, D = aperture size). Thus for a given instrument the deciding quantity of the light itself is its wavelength.
