Cell cycle = Interphase (G₁ → S → G₂) + M phase (prophase → metaphase → anaphase → telophase → cytokinesis).

The cell cycle is the sequence of events from the formation of a cell to its division into two daughter cells. It has two broad phases:

1. Interphase (the resting/preparatory phase, ~95% of the cycle):

  • G₁ (Gap 1): the cell grows, makes proteins and RNA; metabolically active but no DNA synthesis.
  • S (Synthesis): DNA replicates, so each chromosome now has two chromatids; DNA content doubles.
  • G₂ (Gap 2): the cell continues to grow and synthesises proteins needed for division.

2. M phase (Mitotic/division phase):

  • Prophase: chromosomes condense and become visible; the spindle begins to form; nuclear envelope and nucleolus disappear.
  • Metaphase: chromosomes (each with two chromatids) line up at the equator (metaphase plate); spindle fibres attach to centromeres.
  • Anaphase: centromeres split; sister chromatids move to opposite poles. …
