Bryophytes lack vascular tissue and their dominant body is the gametophyte; pteridophytes have vascular tissue and a dominant sporophyte with true roots, stems and leaves.

Differences between bryophytes and pteridophytes:

  1. Vascular tissue:
  • Bryophytes (e.g. Funaria, Marchantia) have no vascular tissue (no true xylem and phloem); water moves by diffusion.

  • Pteridophytes (e.g. fern, Selaginella) have well-developed vascular tissue (xylem and phloem) and are the first true vascular plants.

  1. Dominant plant body and true organs:
  • In bryophytes the dominant, photosynthetic phase is the gametophyte; the plant lacks true roots, stems and leaves (it has rhizoids, and leaf-like/stem-like structures).
  • In pteridophytes the dominant phase is the sporophyte, which has true roots, stems and leaves. …
