Bryophytes can live on land but, like amphibians, still need free water to complete their life cycle (for fertilisation); they are also economically useful, e.g., as peat.

Bryophytes are often called the "amphibians of the plant kingdom" because of a dual dependence on land and water, closely paralleling amphibian animals:

  • They are able to grow and survive on land, unlike algae, which need to live in water.
  • However, they cannot complete their life cycle without water: their male sex organs (antheridia) release motile, flagellated male gametes (antherozoids) that must swim through a film of external water to reach the egg in the archegonium (female sex organ) for fertilisation.

So, just as amphibian animals can live on land but must return to water to reproduce, bryophytes live on land but remain reproductively dependent on water — hence the analogy.
