Bryophytes live on land like other terrestrial plants but, like amphibians, still need external water to complete sexual reproduction, which is why they are called the amphibians of the plant kingdom.

Bryophytes (mosses and liverworts) are among the simplest land plants — they can grow in soil, on rocks, tree trunks, and other terrestrial or semi-terrestrial habitats, showing that they are adapted to life on land to a considerable extent.

However, bryophytes lack a well-developed vascular system and true roots, and — most importantly — their sexual reproduction is not independent of water. The male sex organs (antheridia) release flagellated, motile male gametes called antherozoids, which must swim through a thin film of external water to reach the archegonium (female sex organ) and fertilise the egg cell.
