Bryophytes live on land but, like amphibians, are tied to water for reproduction — their motile male gametes need a film of water to swim to the egg.

Bryophytes (mosses, liverworts) are generally the simplest land plants; the main plant body (gametophyte) grows on soil, rocks, or tree bark in moist, shaded habitats, so they are capable of living independently on land, much like amphibian animals live on land as adults.

However, bryophytes cannot complete their life cycle without water. Their sex organs, the antheridium (male) and archegonium (female), produce gametes, and the male gametes (antherozoids) are motile and flagellated. For fertilisation to occur, a film of water must be present on the plant surface so the antherozoids can swim from the antheridium to the archegonium and fuse with the egg cell. Without free water, fertilisation cannot take place.
