Sewage causes water pollution — it raises BOD and depletes dissolved oxygen (killing fish, causing eutrophication) and it carries pathogens that spread water-borne diseases.

Sewage (domestic waste water) contains large amounts of organic matter, suspended solids and micro-organisms. When untreated sewage is discharged into rivers and other water bodies, it causes serious harm:

  1. Oxygen depletion and death of aquatic life: The organic matter in sewage is decomposed by micro-organisms which consume dissolved oxygen.
