BOD measures a water sample's organic pollution load by how much oxygen microbes consume decomposing it; a higher BOD means dirtier, more oxygen-depleted water.

BOD stands for Biochemical Oxygen Demand (also called Biological Oxygen Demand) — it is defined as the amount of dissolved oxygen needed by microorganisms (chiefly bacteria) to biologically decompose the organic matter present in a given sample of water, typically measured over a standard 5-day incubation period at 20°C.

Since BOD directly reflects the quantity of biodegradable organic pollutants present in a water sample (more organic waste means more oxygen is consumed by microbes breaking it down), BOD is widely used as an indicator of the degree of organic pollution in water bodies — a higher BOD value indicates more severe pollution and greater depletion of dissolved oxygen, which is harmful to fish and other aquatic organisms that depend on that oxygen.
