COD measures water pollution by quantifying how much oxygen a strong chemical oxidant needs to oxidise all organic and inorganic matter in a water sample.

Definition: Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) is defined as the amount of oxygen (usually expressed in mg O2O_2 per litre of sample) required to oxidise both the biodegradable and non-biodegradable organic matter, as well as oxidisable inorganic matter, present in a given sample of water, when a strong oxidising agent is used.

Measurement: the water sample is treated with a known excess of a strong oxidant, typically potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7K_2Cr_2O_7) in the presence of sulphuric acid, and the oxidant consumed is measured; this is converted into an equivalent amount of oxygen.
