COD is the mass of oxygen needed to chemically oxidise all oxidisable matter in a water sample; it is a measure of the level of organic pollution in water.

Water becomes polluted when organic and other oxidisable substances are discharged into it. To judge how polluted the water is, we need a measure of how much of this oxidisable material it contains.

Definition: Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) is the amount of oxygen required to oxidise all the oxidisable matter (organic and inorganic) present in a given sample of water. It is usually expressed in milligrams of oxygen per litre (mg/L or ppm).

How it is measured: The water sample is treated with a known excess of a strong oxidising agent such as acidified potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7). This oxidises virtually all the pollutants, both biodegradable and non-biodegradable. From the amount of oxidant consumed, the equivalent amount of oxygen is calculated.
