Epistasis is an interaction between two different (non-allelic) genes affecting the same character, in which one gene suppresses or masks the phenotypic effect of the other gene located at a different locus.
- The gene that suppresses is called the epistatic gene.
- The gene whose expression is suppressed is called the hypostatic gene.
Because of this masking, the usual dihybrid phenotypic ratio of 9:3:3:1 is modified (for example, into ratios such as 13:3, 12:3:1, or 9:3:4, depending on the type of epistasis). A classic example is coat colour in mice/dogs, and the 12:3:1 ratio in squash fruit colour.
