Intragenic gene interaction occurs between the two alleles of a single gene, and gene interaction overall is classified into intragenic and intergenic types.

A single phenotypic trait is often influenced by the interplay of genes, and this interplay -- gene interaction -- can occur at two distinct levels:

  1. Intragenic (allelic) gene interaction: This is the interaction between the TWO ALLELES of the SAME gene locus, present on a pair of homologous chromosomes in a diploid organism. Because both alleles occupy the same locus and affect the same character, their combined effect on the phenotype can take several forms:
    • Complete dominance -- one allele completely masks the effect of the other.
    • Incomplete dominance -- neither allele is completely dominant, producing an intermediate (blended) phenotype in the heterozygote.
    • Co-dominance -- both alleles express themselves fully and simultaneously in the heterozygote (e.g. ABO blood grouping).
    • Multiple alleles -- more than two alternative forms of the same gene exist in the population, though any individual carries only two. …
