Epistasis occurs when a gene at one locus masks the expression of a gene at another locus; the masking gene is 'epistatic' and the masked gene is 'hypostatic.'

Epistasis is a form of gene interaction between two gene pairs located at different loci (non-allelic genes), in which the expression of one gene pair suppresses or masks the phenotypic expression of the other gene pair. It differs from dominance (which involves alleles of the SAME gene); epistasis involves TWO DIFFERENT genes influencing the same trait.

Hypostatic gene vs epistatic gene:

Hypostatic geneEpistatic gene
The gene whose expression is masked/suppressed by another (non-allelic) geneThe gene that masks/suppresses the expression of another (non-allelic) gene
Its phenotype does not show up when the epistatic gene is presentIts phenotype is expressed, overriding the hypostatic gene
