A transformer uses mutual induction: V_s/V_p = N_s/N_p; step-up increases voltage, step-down decreases it.

Principle. A transformer works on the principle of mutual induction — an alternating current in one coil produces a continuously changing magnetic flux that induces an emf in a neighbouring coil.

Construction. It has two coils, the primary (N_p turns) and the secondary (N_s turns), wound on a common soft-iron core. The core is laminated (thin insulated sheets) to reduce eddy-current losses. The coils are well insulated but magnetically linked so that (ideally) all the flux of the primary links the secondary.

Working. When an alternating voltage V_p is applied to the primary, the alternating current sets up a changing flux φ in the core. The same flux threads the secondary, inducing emfs:

Vp=−Npdϕdt,Vs=−Nsdϕdt.V_p = -N_p\frac{d\phi}{dt},\qquad V_s = -N_s\frac{d\phi}{dt}.

Dividing gives the transformer equation

VsVp=NsNp=k (turns ratio).\frac{V_s}{V_p} = \frac{N_s}{N_p} = k \ (\text{turns ratio}).

For an ideal (100% efficient) transformer, input power = output power:

VpIp=VsIs ⇒ IsIp=NpNs.V_p I_p = V_s I_s \ \Rightarrow\ \frac{I_s}{I_p} = \frac{N_p}{N_s}.
