A transformer is a device based on mutual induction that steps AC voltage up or down according to the turns ratio Vs/Vp=Ns/NpV_s/V_p=N_s/N_p.

Principle: A transformer works on the principle of mutual induction — a changing current in one coil induces an EMF in a neighbouring coil linked by the same magnetic flux. It works only with alternating current.

Construction: It has two coils, the primary (NpN_p turns) and the secondary (NsN_s turns), wound on a common laminated soft-iron core. The laminations (thin insulated sheets) reduce eddy-current losses; soft iron gives a strong, easily reversible flux. The two coils are electrically insulated but magnetically coupled.

Working: An alternating voltage VpV_p applied to the primary produces an alternating flux ϕ\phi in the core. This flux links the secondary and induces an EMF in it. If the flux linked per turn is the same for both coils,

Vp=Npdϕdt,Vs=Nsdϕdt.V_p=N_p\frac{d\phi}{dt},\qquad V_s=N_s\frac{d\phi}{dt}.

Dividing,

VsVp=NsNp=k (turns ratio).\frac{V_s}{V_p}=\frac{N_s}{N_p}=k\ (\text{turns ratio}).

For an ideal (100% efficient) transformer, input power = output power, VpIp=VsIsV_pI_p=V_sI_s, so

VsVp=NsNp=IpIs.\frac{V_s}{V_p}=\frac{N_s}{N_p}=\frac{I_p}{I_s}.

  • Step-up transformer: Ns>Np⇒Vs>VpN_s>N_p\Rightarrow V_s>V_p (voltage raised, current lowered).
  • Step-down transformer: Ns<Np⇒Vs<VpN_s<N_p\Rightarrow V_s<V_p (voltage lowered, current raised). …
