A real transformer is not 100 % efficient. Energy is lost as copper (I²R) loss in the windings, iron loss (hysteresis + eddy currents) in the core, magnetic flux leakage, and humming of the core.

Although an ideal transformer would transfer all the input power to the output, a real transformer loses some energy. The main energy losses are:

  1. Copper loss (I2RI^2R loss). The primary and secondary coils have finite resistance, so current flowing through them dissipates heat, I2RI^2R. Minimised by using thick, low-resistance copper wire.

  2. Iron loss (core loss). This occurs in the iron core and has two parts:

    • Hysteresis loss — energy spent in repeatedly magnetising and demagnetising the core over each AC cycle. Reduced by using a soft magnetic material (e.g. silicon steel) with a narrow hysteresis loop.
    • Eddy-current loss — induced eddy currents circulate in the core and heat it. Reduced by using a laminated core (thin sheets insulated from one another). …
