Fission = a heavy nucleus splitting into lighter fragments; Fusion = light nuclei joining into a heavier one.

Differences between nuclear fission and nuclear fusion:

Nuclear FissionNuclear Fusion
A heavy nucleus splits into two (or more) lighter nuclei. Two light nuclei combine to form a single heavier nucleus.
Example: ²³⁵U + n → ¹⁴¹Ba + ⁹²Kr + 3n + energy.Example: ⁴(¹H) → ⁴He + 2e⁺ + energy (as in the Sun).
Occurs at ordinary temperature; triggered by bombarding with a slow neutron.Requires extremely high temperature and pressure (millions of kelvin).
Energy released per fission is large, but energy per unit mass (per nucleon) is smaller than fusion.Energy released per nucleon is greater than in fission.
