Nuclear fission: a heavy nucleus splits into lighter nuclei with release of energy; harnessed in reactors.

Nuclear fission is the nuclear process in which a heavy, unstable nucleus (such as 92235U^{235}_{92}\text{U}), typically on absorbing a neutron, splits into two (or more) lighter nuclei of comparable mass, along with the release of two or three fast neutrons and a large amount of energy (about 200 MeV per fission event), e.g. 92235U+n→56141Ba+3692Kr+3n+energy^{235}_{92}\text{U}+n\rightarrow{}^{141}_{56}\text{Ba}+{}^{92}_{36}\text{Kr}+3n+\text{energy}.
