Nuclear fission splits a heavy nucleus into two roughly equal, lighter nuclei, releasing energy because the fragments are more tightly bound (per nucleon) than the original nucleus.

Nuclear fission is the process in which a heavy (large mass number) nucleus splits into two lighter nuclei of roughly comparable mass, usually after capturing a slow (thermal) neutron, along with the emission of a few more neutrons and a large amount of energy.

This happens because the binding energy per nucleon is higher for medium-mass nuclei than for very heavy nuclei; when a heavy nucleus splits into two medium-mass fragments, the total binding energy increases, and this extra binding energy is released as kinetic energy of the fragments and neutrons, and as gamma radiation.
