Fission splits a heavy nucleus into lighter ones; fusion joins light nuclei into a heavier one — both release energy because the products are more tightly bound.

Nuclear fission. The process in which a heavy nucleus (e.g. uranium) splits into two lighter nuclei of comparable mass, releasing a few neutrons and a large amount of energy. The energy appears because the binding energy per nucleon of the products is greater than that of the parent. Example:

92235U+ 01n→ 56141Ba+ 3692Kr+3 01n+energy (≈200 MeV).^{235}_{92}\text{U} + \,^{1}_{0}\text{n} \to \,^{141}_{56}\text{Ba} + \,^{92}_{36}\text{Kr} + 3\,^{1}_{0}\text{n} + \text{energy}\,(\approx 200\text{ MeV}).

The released neutrons can trigger further fissions — a chain reaction (used in reactors and atom bombs).
