Introduction
This chapter looks at how India has been governed by one and the same Constitution for more than 69 years, even though it has been amended many times. It explains how the Constitution can be amended, why so many amendments have taken place, the special role the judiciary has played in interpreting and protecting the Constitution through the basic structure doctrine, and why maturity among political leaders has helped the Constitution survive as a living, evolving document rather than a frozen rulebook.
