Q.Collect newspaper clippings about elections in India/other countries. Classify by representation system, voter eligibility, EC role. Visit ECI/ACE Project websites for 4 countries.
This activity asks you to classify real news clippings using the chapter's own three-part framework: representation system, voter eligibility, and the Election Commission's role — and to verify your classification against real country data from the ECI and ACE Project.
This is a research-and-classification activity rather than a question with one fixed answer, but the chapter gives a clear framework to organise the clippings around:
1. System of representation. Identify whether the country in each clipping uses First Past the Post (like India or the UK — single-member constituencies, one vote per candidate), Proportional Representation (like Israel or the Netherlands — party-list voting, seats proportional to vote share), or a mixed/indirect method (like India's own Rajya Sabha, elected by STV).
2. Voter eligibility. Note the minimum voting age and any eligibility conditions each country sets — India's own rule is universal adult franchise from age 18 (lowered from 21 in 1989), with no restriction by education, property, or gender; compare this against the rules reported in each clipping.
3. Role of the Election Commission. Note whether the country has an independent election-conducting authority (as India's Constitution guarantees under Article 324, with security of tenure and wide powers to ensure free and fair polls) or whether elections are instead run more directly by the government of the day, which is a meaningfully different — and often less independent — arrangement.
For real comparative data across at least four countries to check your clippings against, the Election Commission of India's own website (eci.gov.in) and the ACE Project — the Electoral Knowledge Network (aceproject.org) — are the two sources the chapter itself points to, and are good starting points for looking up how a specific country answers each of these three questions.
Classify each clipping under the chapter's own three questions — representation system (FPTP vs PR vs a mixed/indirect method), voter eligibility (age and any other conditions), and the Election Commission's independence and role — and cross-check the classification against real data for at least four countries from eci.gov.in and aceproject.org.
