Democracies handle competing nationalist aspirations better than authoritarian governments because they can grant recognition, protection and representation to minority identities within one state, whereas authoritarian regimes typically try to suppress or forcibly homogenise those identities, which only deepens resentment and conflict.

A democracy can respond to conflicting nationalist aspirations by granting real group rights — constitutional protection for the language, culture and religion of minority communities, and sometimes a right to representation for these groups in legislatures and other state institutions. The Indian Constitution's elaborate protections for religious, linguistic and cultural minorities are an example of exactly this approach. By defining national identity inclusively — recognising the value and unique contribution of every cultural community, rather than forcing everyone into one religious or linguistic mould — a democracy reduces a minority's felt need to seek a wholly separate state, since its identity and rights are already genuinely protected within the existing state. …
