Srinivas began his education at Mysore University, then moved to Bombay to complete an MA under G.S. Ghurye, staying on for his doctoral work there as well (a two-volume PhD thesis submitted in 1944, again supervised by Ghurye). In 1945 he left for Oxford, studying first under Radcliffe-Brown and then under Evans-Pritchard, and was awarded a D.Phil. in Social Anthropology in 1947, after which he returned to India.
