Ghurye built this definition from the classical textual tradition so that it could serve as a standard checklist for testing how caste actually worked in practice, and it rests on six features.

First, segmental division: caste divides society into closed compartments, membership fixed entirely by birth, with no other way in or out. Second, hierarchical division: every caste ranks strictly above or below every other, at least in principle. Third, restrictions on social interaction: elaborate rules, grounded in ideas of purity and pollution, govern especially the sharing of food between castes, reaching their most severe form in untouchability. Fourth, differential rights and duties: castes are treated unequally not only in religious matters but in secular, everyday life as well, following directly from the hierarchy and interaction restrictions. Fifth, restricted occupation: traditional occupation, like caste membership, is hereditary, so caste functions at the level of society as a rigid, birth-based division of labour.
