Village studies mattered for several linked reasons. Methodologically, they gave Indian sociology a sustained, concrete demonstration of ethnographic fieldwork as a serious research method, at a time when this needed establishing within Indian social science. Substantively, they produced detailed, first-hand accounts of the rapid social change taking place across the Indian countryside just as the newly independent nation began its programme of planned development -- accounts that urban Indians and policymakers alike found genuinely useful for understanding rural India at a moment when this mattered nationally.
