A reference group is a group whose lifestyle, standards or values a person admires and tries to emulate, even without actually belonging to that group. It functions as a benchmark a person measures themselves against, and as a source of ideas about culture, aspiration and what counts as achievement or success.

The key difference between a reference group and the group a person actually belongs to (their in-group, or their genuine social group membership) is the question of actual membership and mutual identification. An in-group is a group one is a real member of, sharing continuous interaction, a sense of belonging and common norms with fellow members. A reference group, by contrast, need involve no membership at all — a person can look up to and imitate a group's standards purely from the outside, without the group even being aware of them. …
