Formal social control operates through codified, systematic mechanisms backed by dedicated institutions — chiefly law and the state. It is 'formal' precisely because the rules are written down, publicly known, and enforced by an official body with recognised authority to do so; a court sentencing someone for a crime, or the police enforcing a traffic law, are clear examples of formal social control in action.

Informal social control, by contrast, is personal, unofficial and largely uncodified. It works through the ordinary texture of everyday interaction — a disapproving look, criticism, ridicule, gossip, or simple social exclusion — delivered by agencies such as the family, religious community or peer group rather than by any official institution. A family expressing quiet disapproval when a member behaves in a way the family considers inappropriate, or a peer group excluding someone who does not conform to its expectations, are both examples of informal social control. …
