A census (complete enumeration) gives more accurate and complete results because every unit is studied — there is no sampling error. But it is expensive and slow, so a sample is preferred when the population is very large or a census is not feasible.

The two methods

  • Census method: data are collected from each and every unit of the population.
  • Sample method: data are collected from a representative part of the population and the results are generalised.

Which gives better results, and why

On accuracy alone, the census gives better results because:

  • it covers the entire population, so there is no sampling error;
  • information is available for every unit, giving complete detail.

But the census has real costs:

  • it is expensive, time-consuming and needs large resources;
