"Laboured ease" is a paradox showing that the women's easy-looking smiles actually cost them real emotional effort.

An "ease" that is "laboured" should be a contradiction, since true ease requires no labour at all. The poet uses this paradox deliberately to describe how both the mother, remembering her cousins and her youth, and by extension the poet herself, remembering her mother, manage to smile at what they have lost.
