Yes — languages carry culture, knowledge and identity, so preserving them protects irreplaceable human heritage and diversity.

It is certainly important to preserve languages. A language is far more than a means of communication: it is the living memory of a people. It stores their history, folklore, songs, proverbs, literature and traditional knowledge — of medicine, farming, and the natural world — much of which exists nowhere else. When a language dies, all of this is lost forever.

A language is also central to identity. As The Last Lesson shows so movingly, a mother tongue binds a community together and gives its members a sense of who they are; losing it feels like losing a part of oneself.
