It would be easy to blame the father, since the poem opens with his perspective and his admission that he tried to shape his son to his own design — a controlling impulse that could explain some distance between them. Yet the poem does not let the son off lightly either: his own brief, evasive words at the end reveal that he too withholds himself and struggles to communicate honestly.
