Daniel
Daniel is the author's companion and interpreter for the first part of the journey. He is the bridge between the author and the Tibetans who speak no English — it is 'through Daniel' that Lhamo and the author communicate. He is practical and knowledgeable about the dangers of the terrain: at the first snow blockage it is Daniel who warns that the real danger is not the depth of the snow but its slippery, icy top layer, which could tip the car over.
