A short creative exercise: write four vivid lines on a tree near you — a model on the neem tree is given.

This is a creative writing activity, so you should compose your own four lines. There is no single right answer; the aim is to observe a tree around you — a neem, banyan, mango, gulmohar or peepal — and capture one clear picture or feeling about it, just as Ted Hughes captured the laburnum. A simple rhyme scheme (such as AABB) helps, but is not essential.

Steps to follow:

  • Pick a tree you can actually see near your home or school.
  • Notice one strong detail — its shape, colour, shade, the birds in it, or the sound of its leaves.
  • Write four short lines using that image; try to make the lines roughly equal in length and, if you can, rhyme them.
