Theme and Message
The poem's central theme is the interdependence of life in nature — how a single living creature can pour energy and meaning into a still, lifeless thing, and how the two are bound together. The laburnum tree is silent and empty until the goldfinch arrives; her coming makes it "tremble and thrill", and her going leaves it empty again. Tree and bird complete each other: the tree shelters the bird's family, and the bird brings the tree to life.
A second theme is the contrast between stillness and movement, silence and sound. The poem opens and closes in stillness, but its middle is a burst of energetic activity — a structure that mirrors the fleeting nature of such moments.
Hughes also celebrates the beauty and vitality of ordinary nature and the tender bond of a mother caring for her young — the goldfinch is the "engine of her family", feeding her waiting chicks. …
