The poem traces rain rising from land and sea, forming clouds, and falling back to earth — the same evaporation-condensation-precipitation cycle taught in science.

The cyclic movement of rain is brought out through the rain's own account of its journey. It "rise[s] impalpable out of the land and the bottomless sea" — that is, water goes up as invisible vapour. It travels "upward to heaven, whence, vaguely form'd, altogether changed, and yet the same" — it takes the new form of clouds while remaining, in essence, still water. Then it "descend[s] to lave the droughts, atomies, dust-layers of the globe," falling back to wash and nourish the earth, and "forever, by day and night" it "give[s] back life to my own origin." …
