A microwave oven and an automatic washing machine are two everyday devices run by embedded microcontrollers — single chips combining CPU, memory and I/O for one dedicated control job.

The concept. A microcontroller is "a computer on a chip": CPU, RAM, ROM, I/O ports and timers integrated into one small, cheap, low-power package. Because it is self-contained, manufacturers embed it inside appliances to run one fixed control program for the device's whole life. Once you know this, you find microcontrollers everywhere at home and school.

Two model examples

  1. Microwave oven. Its microcontroller:
    • reads your key presses (time, power level) from the keypad,
    • runs the countdown timer and switches the magnetron on/off to hold the chosen power,
    • rotates the turntable, and sounds the buzzer when done.
  2. Fully automatic washing machine. Its microcontroller:
    • takes the selected wash program,
    • opens the inlet valve to fill water, senses the level,
    • drives the drum motor through wash → rinse → spin sequences with correct timings, and stops the cycle safely. …
