By timing:
- Pre-natal: events, accidents, illness or infection to the mother during pregnancy — e.g., maternal high blood pressure or diabetes.
- Perinatal: conditions occurring during delivery — delayed labour pain, low birth weight, or neonatal infections.
- Post-natal: post-birth conditions — illness, infection, poor environment, accidents, psychological factors.
