1. Honesty
A defining quality. When a leader is responsible for a team, it is important to be straightforward; if the leader makes honest, ethical behaviour a key value, the team will follow.
2. Delegation of duty
A leader must focus on key responsibilities and delegate work, duties and even authority to team members, then oversee how they perform.
3. Communication skills
Communication is the key to success. Without clear communication, no one understands the mission, goals and vision; instructions and tasks must be passed on clearly and consistently.
4. Confidence
A good leader is confident enough to ensure that others follow their instructions and place their trust in them.
5. Commitment
There is no greater motivation for a team than seeing the leader work alongside everyone else. Proving commitment earns the team's respect and instils the same drive in the members.
6. Accountability
A good leader takes responsibility for everyone's performance, as well as their own, and does not blame others when things go wrong - leaders are "fixers" who make things right.
7. Enthusiasm
From the Greek for "possessed by a god," enthusiasm describes a leader who is motivating, energetic, passionate and dynamic about their own work and their role as leader.
8. Focus
A good leader is focused and able to think rationally, and is self-driven to work harder for better results.
