The cell is the basic building block of every living organism. It is at once the smallest unit that has structure and the smallest unit that can actually do the work of being alive. That is why it is described as the fundamental unit of life rather than merely a part of an organism.
The clearest evidence comes from organisms that exist as a single cell. These unicellular forms show us something important: one complete cell is enough to survive on its own. A single-celled organism can lead an independent existence, without depending on any other cell, and can carry out all the essential functions of life by itself. Because a lone cell can manage both of these — independent living and the full range of life's functions — and because anything smaller or less complete than a whole cell cannot support independent living, the cell is recognised as the smallest package of matter that is genuinely alive.
This conclusion is captured in the cell theory, which sums up what every living body is made of and where every cell comes from:
- All living organisms are composed of cells and the products of cells.
- All cells arise from pre-existing cells. …
