Part (a): The Constituent Assembly fiercely debated whether Hindi should be the national language; non-Hindi members resisted, and the compromise made Hindi the official language with English retained for fifteen years, avoiding the term "national language".

Part (a)

Language was among the most emotionally charged questions the Constituent Assembly faced, because it touched identity, culture and everyday administration.

Hindi supporters argued passionately that Hindi in the Devanagari script should be the national language of independent India — the language of the freedom struggle and a symbol of unity distinct from colonial English. R. V. Dhulekar even insisted that the Assembly's business be conducted in Hindi and objected to the use of English, which inflamed feelings.

Members from non-Hindi regions, particularly the South, resisted strongly. They feared that making Hindi the sole official language would place speakers of Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Bengali and other tongues at a permanent disadvantage in administration, education and employment.
