Part (a)

Abul Fazl ibn Mubarak (1551–1602) was one of the most important figures at the court of Emperor Akbar. A brilliant scholar and the son of the liberal theologian Sheikh Mubarak, he joined Akbar's court in 1574 and rose to become the emperor's closest adviser and chief ideologue. He helped shape Akbar's policy of Sulh-i-Kul (absolute peace, tolerance towards all religions) and articulated the Mughal idea of the emperor as a just, divinely-guided sovereign.

His greatest contribution is the Akbarnama ("Book of Akbar"), the official history of Akbar's reign, written in Persian over many years. It is arranged in three volumes: the first traces Akbar's ancestry and early life; the second gives a detailed, year-by-year account of the reign; and the third, the Ain-i-Akbari ("Institutes of Akbar"), is a rich statistical and administrative record describing the government, the revenue system, the army, the provinces, and the social and cultural life of the empire. …
