Part (a): The Harappan script is enigmatic because it is undeciphered - short inscriptions, no bilingual key, an unknown language, a mixed sign system, and no descendant script.

Part (b): The Harappan drainage system is planned and complete because covered brick street drains, connected to every house and fitted with a gradient and manholes, were built as an integral part of the town plan.

Part (a)

The Harappan (Indus) script is described as "enigmatic" - that is, mysterious and puzzling - because scholars have not been able to read it since the civilisation's discovery in the 1920s, even though more than four thousand inscribed objects survive.

Several difficulties combine to keep it undeciphered:

  • The inscriptions are very short. Most seals and tablets carry only four or five signs; many have just one or two. There is no long text, royal proclamation or literary composition that would reveal sentence structure.
  • There is no bilingual inscription. Egyptian hieroglyphs were cracked using the Rosetta Stone, which repeated the same text in a known script (Greek). Nothing comparable exists for the Harappan script.
  • The underlying language is unknown. Scholars have argued for Dravidian, Munda or an unknown isolate, but none has been proved, so sounds cannot be confidently assigned to signs.
  • The sign system is hard to classify. Estimates run to several hundred signs (about 375-400 or more) - too many for an alphabet, too few for a fully logographic script - suggesting a mixed logo-syllabic system, the hardest type to decipher. The direction of writing (generally right-to-left, sometimes boustrophedon) also varies. …
