Al-Biruni’s Kitab-ul-Hind was written not to preach, map, or criticise, but to document and understand Indian culture from a neutral, scholarly perspective.

Al-Biruni, the great Persian scholar who travelled to India in the early 11th century, is remembered for his remarkable work Kitab-ul-Hind (also known as Ta’rikh al-Hind). This book is not a travelogue or a religious text — it is a systematic, encyclopaedic study of Indian civilisation. To understand its primary aim, we must first appreciate Al-Biruni’s own background. He was a mathematician, astronomer, and linguist who learned Sanskrit to read Indian texts directly. His approach was unusually objective for his time.

The NCERT textbook highlights that Al-Biruni’s Kitab-ul-Hind was a “voluminous text” that explored Indian religion, philosophy, social customs, science, and literature. He did not write to convert anyone or to simply list places. Instead, his goal was to present a faithful account of what he observed and read. He often compared Indian ideas with those of other cultures, especially Greek and Islamic thought, but his tone remained analytical, not judgmental.

Note

Al-Biruni even criticised some Indian practices, but his criticism was based on reason, not religious bias. For example, he questioned the caste system’s rigidity, yet he also praised Indian achievements in mathematics and astronomy.

  • (A) Promote Islamic teaching — Al-Biruni was a Muslim scholar, but Kitab-ul-Hind does not aim to spread Islam. In fact, he deliberately avoided preaching and focused on understanding.
  • (B) Map geographical locations — While the book contains some geographical references, its core is not cartography. Al-Biruni wrote separate works on geography.
  • (C) Critique culture and traditions — He did offer observations, some critical, but the word “critique” implies a primary goal of finding fault. That was not his intention. He sought to explain, not condemn. …
