Part (a): Family in the Mahabharata age was mainly patrilineal and patrilocal, stressing father-to-son succession, kanyadana and gotra rules, but with variations such as Draupadi's polyandry.

Part (b): From the sixth century BCE, kingship often depended on military strength and resources rather than Kshatriya birth, as the Nandas, Mauryas, Shungas and gana-sanghas show.

Part (a)

The great epic the Mahabharata, together with the Dharmasutras and Dharmashastras, allows historians to describe the features of family and kinship in this period, keeping in mind that these texts present ideals that were not always followed in practice.

The central feature was patriliny - descent traced through the male line, from father to son. Succession to kingship normally followed this line: the whole conflict of the Mahabharata turns on rival claims within the Kuru lineage over succession from father to son. Marriage was generally patrilocal, the bride moving into the household of the husband. The father's duty was the kanyadana, the gift of the daughter in marriage, regarded as a religious obligation. Brahmanical texts recognised eight forms of marriage, of which the first four were considered proper and the rest, including those based on the couple's own choice or on abduction, were disapproved. Rules of gotra were important: a woman was expected to give up her father's gotra and adopt her husband's, and marriage between members of the same gotra was forbidden. …
