Q.Write the full form of SEATO.
SEATO stands for the South-East Asia Treaty Organization.
The South-East Asia Treaty Organization, or SEATO, was a collective defence alliance formed during the Cold War. Its creation was driven by the United States' policy of containment — the strategy to prevent the spread of communism. After the communist victory in China in 1949 and the outbreak of the Korean War, the US and its allies sought to build a network of alliances around the Soviet Union and China. SEATO was the Southeast Asian counterpart to NATO in Europe.
The treaty that established SEATO was signed in September 1954 in Manila, Philippines, and came into force in 1955. Its members included the United States, Britain, France, Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Thailand, and the Philippines. Notably, several key Southeast Asian nations — such as India, Indonesia, and Burma — chose not to join, preferring a policy of non-alignment. The organization's stated purpose was to provide for collective defence against aggression, but its real focus was countering communist insurgencies and influence in the region.
Unlike NATO, SEATO had no standing military forces of its own. It relied on member nations to contribute troops on a case-by-case basis, which made it a much looser and less effective alliance.
SEATO's most significant involvement came during the Vietnam War, where it provided a legal and political cover for US intervention. However, the organization was plagued by internal disagreements. France withdrew its financial support in the 1960s, and Pakistan lost interest after its defeat in the 1971 war with India. By the early 1970s, with the US moving toward détente with China and the Vietnam War ending, SEATO had become largely irrelevant. It was formally dissolved in 1977.
In short, SEATO stands for the South-East Asia Treaty Organization, a Cold War-era collective defence alliance aimed at containing communism in Southeast Asia, which was dissolved in 1977.
