Part (a): The 1969 Presidential election (after Zakir Husain's death) became a Gandhi-vs-Syndicate contest; V. V. Giri's win split the Congress into (O) and (R) and consolidated Indira Gandhi's power.

Part (a)

After the 1967 elections the Congress had won at the Centre with a reduced majority, and a power struggle raged between Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and the Syndicate – senior leaders like K. Kamaraj and S. Nijalingappa who had made her PM expecting her to be pliable.

The death of President Zakir Husain in May 1969 created a vacancy that became the battleground. The Syndicate nominated the Speaker, N. Sanjiva Reddy, as the official Congress candidate. Indira Gandhi struck back: she encouraged Vice-President V. V. Giri to stand as an independent and publicly called on Congress legislators to vote according to their 'conscience' rather than the party whip. Giri won, narrowly defeating the official candidate. …
