NCERT lists four factors that provide the context for the learning of attitudes: family and school environment, reference groups, personal experiences, and media-related influences.

Attitudes are formed by the learning processes (association, reward/punishment, modelling, norms, exposure to information). The following four factors provide the context in which that learning takes place.

1. Family and school environment

Particularly in the early years of life, parents and other family members play a significant role in shaping attitude formation. Later, the school environment becomes an important background for forming attitudes. Learning of attitudes within the family and school usually takes place through association, through rewards and punishments, and through modelling.

2. Reference groups

Reference groups indicate to an individual the norms regarding acceptable behaviour and ways of thinking; they therefore reflect the learning of attitudes through group or cultural norms. Attitudes toward various topics — political, religious and social groups, occupations, national and other issues — are often developed through reference groups. Their influence is especially noticeable at the beginning of adolescence, when it is important for the individual to feel that s/he belongs to a group. Since belonging can bring reward and approval, the role of reference groups may also be a case of learning through reward and punishment.

3. Personal experiences

Many attitudes are formed not within the family or through reference groups, but through direct personal experiences that bring about a drastic change in one's attitude toward people and toward one's own life. NCERT gives the real-life example of an army driver who, on a mission, narrowly escaped death though all his companions were killed; reflecting on the purpose of his life, he left the army, returned to his village, and worked as a community leader, evolving a strong positive attitude toward community upliftment — a change brought about purely through personal experience.

4. Media-related influences

Technological advances have made audio-visual media and the Internet very powerful sources of information that lead to attitude formation and change; school-level textbooks also influence attitudes. Such sources first strengthen the cognitive and affective components and may later affect the behavioural component. The media can exert both good and bad influences: on one hand they make people better informed; on the other, there may be no check on the information gathered, and no control over the attitudes formed or their direction of change. The media can create consumerist attitudes where none existed, but can also be harnessed to create positive attitudes that facilitate social harmony.

✓Final answer

The four factors that influence attitude formation are: (1) family and school environment, (2) reference groups, (3) personal experiences, and (4) media-related influences (including textbooks and the Internet). These provide the context within which attitudes are learned by association, reward/punishment, modelling and exposure to information.
