Unconditional Positive Regard
Imagine the most supportive person you know — someone who listens to you without jumping to fix things, who doesn't withdraw their warmth when you mess up, and who makes you feel accepted even when you're at your worst. That feeling of being valued no matter what is the core of unconditional positive regard.
The Intuition
We all grow up with conditions. "I'll be proud of you if you get good marks." "You're a good child when you behave." Over time, we learn to earn approval by meeting expectations — and we start hiding the parts of ourselves that might get rejected. This creates a gap between who we really are and who we think we should be.
Unconditional positive regard is the opposite of that. It says: you are worthy of care and respect not because of what you do, but because of who you are. It doesn't mean approving of every action — it means separating the person from the behaviour. A parent can say "I love you, but hitting your brother is not okay" without the child feeling that love has been withdrawn.
The Precise Statement

Unconditional positive regard means prizing the whole person — including their flaws, mistakes, and negative feelings — without judgment. It is not conditional on the person meeting any standard of behaviour, thought, or achievement. …
